Different Educational Bases of Students and the Impact on their Studies

Earth University is a diverse community with precisely forty two different countries represented in its population. Every year, pools of students apply to be admitted into Earth University from all around the world and due to its standardized class size, only approximately one hundred and twenty students get to be chosen to attend this prestigious university. Each of these students have different educational background due their different country’s academic systems and each of these students possesses varying academic capacity. Also, among the challenges faced by students: language is a big limitation in their studies considering the fact that the official language at Earth University is Spanish and some of the students come from non-Spanish speaking countries in Africa, Asia, North America. So in order to understand the different educational bases of the students and its impact of the students’ studies, the focus will be directed to the students’ former educational background, educational capacity and how the language affect their studies.

As names of countries differ, so does the cultural system differ: and this includes the system of education in each country. Students are faced with the challenge of adjusting to the new system of education present in Earth University because it is different from what they are accustomed to. For example, Earth University is known for its outstanding system of education which is practically ’you learn by doing’, the curriculum is programed in such way that it is seventy percent practical and thirty percent theory. This system of education is truly productive but it has a high demand on time. So students at Earth University do not enjoy the flexibility of study choices like other conventional universities offer as a result students face limitations in their studies. Some student adapt quickly to the change but others struggle and find it difficult to keep up with the demands of Earth University grading system. Academic performance is of great importance to Earth and this is directly affected by the attitude of each student to his or her studies. For example, students from Africa are faced with a peculiar problem of sleep because of the vast difference in time zone. To be more specific, the time difference between Nigeria and Costa Rica (Earth University location) is 8 hours difference and this is found to be difficult to cope with the scheduled class time at 6:30AM resulting in lateness to class which directly mean, five percent deduction from someone’s final score. Well, it maybe that country’s time difference should not be a challenge to the performance of students but this is the day to day challenge of students because Earth University grades everyone equally not regarding each person’s difficulty.

Looking at the bright side of everything, the equal grading system used on students brings out the best in them. How? Students are made to realize the great opportunities they have while at Earth University, everyone gets to graduate with almost a first class certificate, because to obtain a degree in Earth, one must have fulfilled all the high demanding requirements. The tenacity and doggedness of students to face challenges is discovered and perseverance is a virtue all student obtain. So it can be said someone does not graduate from Earth University without Earth University passing through them. Through the seemingly difficulties that students face, they learn life values that help them to lead a successful life therefore the students educational capacity is strengthened because of the new exposure.

In same vein, it is said that people have strengths and weaknesses but most people have never classified language to be a strength or a weakness but to some students in Earth University, it is either of them. Speaking a language is a skill that can be learned and in Earth University speaking Spanish is a skill that must be learned, so for all non-Spanish speaking students they are faced with a language barrier problem. Despite this, all students are expected to learn and maintain high grades- both the Spanish speaking students and the non-spanish speaking students. Therefore, this might be perceived to be unfair but the high demand of the academic system at Earth University does not go without appropriate measures to help students deal with every possible challenge. For example, african and caribbean students arrive at Earth University four months earlier before the opening of the new class section to participate in an intensive spanish program to be able to acclimatize to the environment, the people and the language. Even after the program, there is help available to all students though the professors. Yes, there are educational difficulties, but there are also corresponding solutions to them all.

In conclusion, the different educational bases of the students has impacts on the students’ studies both positively and negatively but the outcome of the situation depends on the students’ attitudes. In the end, overcoming the challenges produce a positive result in the lives of the students making them leader of change in the society who build a just and prosperous society.
